If a rogue can catch an opponent when he is unable to defend himself effectively from her attack, she can strike a vital spot for extra damage. Helpless creatures can be sneak attacked too. Fewer in PF (rogues can sneak attack undead for instance), though some still exist. This includes ray or touch spells (and in Pathfinder, a rogue with a couple levels of wiz or sorcerer can be downright evil, with at will 0 level spells that can sneak attack).ĭepending on if you are using PF or 3.5, certain creatures are immune. Some things to remember about sneak attack, so you don't get blindsided by a sneaky player: Not just melee weapons count! Any ranged attack within 30', so long as it meets the other requirements, can be a sneak attack. Not being able to see the rogue definitely would (the target would also be denied their Dex bonus, even if by some chance they were not flat footed).įlanking is the other biggie for sneak attacking. There are a few other instances where this is the case (ambushes), or feats that induce that status in a target. Most common flat footed time is at the start of a combat (all combatants are flat footed until they take their first action). Flat footed is just one instance where you are denied your dex bonus (a somewhat common instance). It is not just flat footed, it is any situation where the target is denied their dex bonus, or flanked by the rogue.
